For anyone that is or has been married, the events of the day can be captured in images, forever; digital wedding photography has changed how wedding photographers can carry out their work ensuring the day is captured on disk. Couples often have a DVD made as well so that even more of the occasion is captured.
Fortunately for wedding photographers they can use an assistant to help them get the right shots but if you're a friend taking pictures, then how do you take good shots of the day? So, if you need some help for a wedding you are to attend and you are going to use a digital camera, then you may find some useful information in this article. Most importantly try to ensure you don't have poor background scenery and that there aren't too many people in the shot. If there is a pleasant background but it is hard to focus on the couple, you may find it easier to shoot them from shoulder up.
Although you don't always think about it at the time, try to ensure those wedding guests wearing spectacles either take them off or provide you with a semi-profile shot. If you are shooting into the light, remember to compensate and increase the aperture otherwise the couple (or guests) will appear dark in the image. Candid shots are also dramatic and these portraits often reveal more than the quality of the picture itself; in fact, many professionals use the zoom to capture intimate and memorable moments. As you can't keep asking people to pose for you, always have the camera to hand because digital wedding photography is just as much about having natural, un-posed for shots.
Probably the most important thing to remember with digital cameras is to have plenty of memory in your camera plus fresh batteries and the best way to ensure this is to always carry spares. For 6 mega pixel cameras and up, the absolute bare minimum should be a 1 gigabyte card, preferably 2 gigabytes and always use the highest resolution your camera can manage if the images are to be printed. The higher the resolution you set the better the images will be and the larger they can be printed out. Storing the wedding images on a computer or CD will mean that you can print them off whenever you want but a presentation CD can be played back on a TV. One of the biggest advantages of digital wedding photography is the ease with which the images can be viewed on anything from a computer monitor to a large flat screen TV.
